Claude Haiku 5.5 vs 4.5: pricing and changes
Compare Haiku 5.5 and 4.5: API pricing tiers, published benchmarks, Sonnet 5.5 differences and a practical migration checklist.

Haiku 5.5: a small model for repeated tasks
Claude Haiku 5.5 launched on October 7, 2026. Anthropic positions it for frequent, cost-sensitive work: extraction, classification, summaries and subagent tasks. It follows Haiku 4.5 with a larger context window and adjustable effort. The useful question is not just whether it is better, but which jobs it can handle without increasing rework.
Product records, request triage and first-pass SEO export reviews are reasonable places to try Haiku. For decisions involving conflicting sources, compare Sonnet or Opus. Our Claude family guide covers those roles; this article focuses on moving from Haiku 4.5 to 5.5.
What changes from Haiku 4.5?
| Specification | Haiku 4.5 | Haiku 5.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Context window | 200,000 tokens | 1 million tokens |
| Standard maximum output | 64,000 tokens | 128,000 tokens |
| Input / output | Text and images / text | Text and images / text |
| Thinking | Manually configured extended thinking | Adaptive thinking with adjustable effort |
| Default API effort | Not supported | medium |
These are standard API limits from the Haiku 5.5 and Haiku 4.5 model pages, not a guaranteed conversation allowance in a subscription. More context lets you supply more material; you still need to check that the model located the right evidence.
The tokenizer also changes. The same text uses approximately 30% more tokens on Haiku 5.5, according to the documentation, with the exact difference depending on the content. Recalculate an old token budget even when the price per token falls.
Pricing: two tiers, not one flat rate
| Model and prompt length | Uncached input | Cache read | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku 5.5 · up to 100,000 tokens inclusive | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
| Haiku 5.5 · over 100,000 tokens | $0.50 | $0.05 | $2.50 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $1.00 | $0.10 | $5.00 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2.00 | $0.10 | $10.00 |
The threshold counts all input tokens in the request, including cache reads and writes. Above 100,000, the higher rates apply to that request, not just the excess portion. Earlier requests keep their billed rates. Anthropic's long-context pricing rule matters as a conversation grows.
At identical token counts, Haiku 5.5's input and output rates are 90% below 4.5 in the lower tier and 50% below it in the upper tier. That is not a guaranteed reduction in the cost of completing a job. Thinking, tools, retries and tokenization all affect actual consumption.
A budget example you can check
| Model | Total cost |
|---|---|
| Haiku 5.5 | $1.50 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $15.00 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $30.00 |
The calculation uses 10 million input tokens and one million output tokens, without caching, paid tools, Batch discounts or geographic surcharges. Every request stays below the 100,000-token threshold. This is an equal-token calculation, not a measurement of three models completing identical work.
Cheap processing can lose its advantage if someone has to fix the results one by one. For a batch of product descriptions, count misidentified products and review time as well as API dollars.

Source: the October 7 Haiku 5.5 announcement. These are published scores, not Rankerfox test results. The launch table does not state the effort used for each row; equal settings are not assumed here. A zero on a particular evaluation does not mean Haiku 4.5 cannot write code.
These tests provide reference points for computer operation, coding and chart understanding. They do not measure SEO briefs or Google rankings. For your own use, check errors that would matter: invented references, wrong categories and incorrectly copied numbers.
Haiku 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5?
Our starting point: Haiku for a defined operation, Sonnet for connecting several steps. Extracting a product reference and color from a supplied record differs from explaining why a product range is losing traffic. The latter requires linking periods, categories, site changes and limitations in the export.
Haiku can handle an initial pass and send ambiguous cases to Sonnet. Treat this as a workflow to evaluate, not an accuracy guarantee. Sonnet 5.5 retains an advantage in the coding table above, but its value depends on the finished result and the time spent correcting it.
In the API, Haiku 5.5 defaults to medium effort. Try low for very simple jobs and high when instructions or steps become more demanding. Use xhigh or max only where evaluations show a gain; at that point, compare a heavily reasoning Haiku with Sonnet as well.
Three practical content and SEO uses
Classify a page export
Supply URLs, titles and allowed categories. Request a category, the evidence supporting it and a review state when information is missing. Check a sample before processing the remaining rows. Do not ask Haiku to invent page contents from a URL alone.
Prepare product descriptions from a catalog
Supply verified specifications and the required fields. Allow empty values for missing facts: an unknown material is better than a fabricated one. Keep human approval before publishing.
Summarize documents for another model
Retain dates, units and references in the summary so the next model can trace a number to its source. Pay particular attention to exceptions and qualifications: removing them makes a summary shorter, not necessarily more useful.
Moving from 4.5 to 5.5: checks before switching
For API integrations, Anthropic's migration guide describes changes beyond the model name:
- Use the
claude-haiku-5-5model ID. - Remove
temperature,top_pandtop_k. Stop ending requests with an assistant prefill. - Select response blocks by type: the first may be
thinking, not the text intended for the user. - Recount tokens and leave room for thinking within
max_tokens, as explained in the technical changes. - Replay a saved sample covering easy, ambiguous and unanswerable cases. Compare failures before switching the entire workload.
In a chat interface, you do not need to edit these API settings. The evaluation principle is the same: use identical documents and expected outcomes, then review differences before changing a working routine.
Claude access, Max 20x and Rankerfox
Haiku 5.5 is announced on the Claude Platform and major cloud platforms. Vendor availability is separate from the model list in a particular session. Claude and Claude Max 20x are part of Rankerfox Premium; check the exact name in your session's model picker. Max 20x is a usage tier, not another Haiku model. The API prices above do not represent a Rankerfox API quota or credit allowance. See the plans for included access.
Frequently asked questions
Will Haiku 5.5 automatically replace 4.5 in my application?
No. You need to change the model and validate the integration. The documentation checked still lists Haiku 4.5 as an active legacy model. Successful migration is demonstrated by responses and errors, not a version number alone.
Can I use a million-token context at the lowest rate?
No. Context capacity and the pricing threshold are different. The lowest tier ends at 100,000 input tokens inclusive; longer prompts raise the rate for that request.
Does a longer context replace source research?
No. It lets you supply more documents, but does not supply missing evidence or guarantee every detail is used correctly. For recent information, provide sources and check references.
